We are always looking out for new ways to show the usage and benefits of advanced materials. The PR group for the NanoTX’06 has a new one, unveiled at the event held at the Dallas Convention Center September 26-28. NanoTX’06 is claimed to be the largest nanotechnology conference in the world and the largest trade expo outside of Tokyo (Isn’t everything bigger in Texas?)
Synergy Yachts and Zyvex will demonstrate a high performance yacht constructed using nanotechnology. The mast uses high-modulus carbon fiber impregnated with NanoSolve® enhanced epoxy resin. The NanoSolve® materials increase the compressive strength and stiffness of the mast - the critical characteristics - without adding weight. The mast is 10% lighter for the same engineered strength and stiffness. The keel foil is also constructed from carbon fiber, and the NanoSolve® materials were incorporated to give increased strength without increasing the weight.
We at NanoVic believe there is potential for further nanotechnology enhancements. Obvious examples are sails, where engineered textiles with improved strength or water-repellent qualities or even dynamic interaction with the air could make sails much more efficient.

Man the ingredients of the mast is simply groundbreaking. I’d like to see how it handles in heavy winds.
