As nanotechnology becomes more ubiquitous, we are seeing it pop up a lot more in everyday products. One product in particular that caught my attention is hair straighteners. No, I don’t own or use one, but I noticed that a few of them incorporate gold or silver nanoparticles on the heating elements. A website selling hair straighteners, claim that the ones incorporating silver nanopoarticles “leave your hair shiny, super clean and fresh - and your straightener too, so you can share it with your friends!”. I can believe this, as it has been our experience with nano silver that it can be an effective antibacterial agent. The straighteners incorporating nano gold have similar claims about shininess, which seem a little suspect to us, given that nano-gold does not exhibit the same antimicrobial properties as silver. Admittedly, the products that use nano-gold don’t claim to be antimicrobial, just that they leave your hair shiny. Again, not sure how this would work though.
So if anyone out there has got one of these (or have used your friends one
) let us know if they work!
